Snack Time at Preschool Snack time is a social and enjoyable part of the day where children sit together and share in healthy, balanced snacks. We offer a variety of nutritious options to encourage good eating habits and support each child's wellbeing.
Healthy Eating & Meal/Snack times at The Hamlet
We recognise that each child has unique needs when it comes to food. We’re committed to promoting healthy eating habits while also respecting and supporting children who require alternative or specialist diets.
Supporting Healthy Eating for All
Many children can develop healthy eating habits with the right encouragement. Our staff work closely with families, carers, and other professionals to help every child enjoy a balanced diet in a way that is safe, enjoyable, and suited to their individual needs.
- We follow the NHS Eatwell Guide as well as our internal policies to encourage balanced nutrition.
- Food is presented in a way that supports each child’s sensory and physical needs.
- Staff are trained to follow any Eating and Drinking Plans or professional recommendations.
Children who require a specialist diet will have a detailed Eating & Drinking section included in their individual Support Plan.
Packed Lunches
What to Include:
We ask that families provide a nutritious packed lunch that suits their child’s needs and preferences.
- Lunches should follow any feeding guidelines given by healthcare professionals.
- Please use a secure, clearly labelled lunchbox with an ice pack to keep food fresh.
- Foods should be easy to eat and support your child’s developmental stage and dietary plan.
We’re happy to provide support and suggestions for packed lunches. Guidance is available to help families make healthy and suitable food choices.
Hot Meals
For food hygiene reasons:
- We cannot reheat homemade meals.
- If you would like to send a warm meal, please use a suitable thermos flask or insulated container.
- We can reheat shop-bought ready meals only if they remain in their original packaging and have clear reheating instructions from the manufacturer.
Food Waste & Monitoring
We aim to return uneaten food in your child’s lunchbox so you can:
- Monitor what your child has eaten
- Raise any concerns about food intake with us
Any food left lunch bags that have not gone home at the end of the day will be disposed of for hygiene reasons.
Drinks & Water Bottles
Children are encouraged to bring a labelled water bottle to use throughout the day and on off-site activities.
- Clean drinking water is always available. We encourage children to drink water rather than squash.
- All children are encouraged to drink regularly throughout the day, especially at lunchtime.
- If a bottle is lost or damaged, we will inform parents/carers promptly.
Snack Time at The Hamlet
We provide healthy, nutritious snacks throughout the day, avoiding foods high in:
- Fat
- Sugar
- Salt
- Artificial additives or colourings
Snack time is a social learning opportunity. Children and staff talk about healthy choices, reflect on home eating habits, and engage in food-related activities such as:
- Food preparation
- Role play
- Story time
- Off-site learning (e.g. visiting shops or markets)
This approach is fully aligned with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guidance and supports the development of life-long healthy habits.
If your child has specific dietary requirements, sensory preferences, or feeding needs, please speak to our team. We're here to work with you in making mealtimes positive, inclusive, and safe.
